Obituary for Albert William Nelson (Nelson)

NELSON, Albert Wm - On January 6, 2017 Albert William Nelson died in his 103rd year. Born in Wales on July 29th, 1913, he immigrated to Canada as a young man and worked as a farm labourer. He was an undefeated amateur boxer and fought the first of 17 matches in Peterborough, Ontario in 1934. When WWII broke out, he enlisted with the 14th Midland Field Battery in Cobourg, Ontario. He served with the 2nd division of the 4th field regiment unit in the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division in various arenas of war throughout Europe. He was a member of the NATO Forces Placement in Germany from 1957 to 1959. He retired from the Army in 1965 and moved to Hastings, Ontario, the hometown of his wife Marie (nee Scriver) were he ran a TV sales and service business until retirement in his seventies. He became active in local politics and was both a counselor and four term Reeve of the village. He was also an active member of the Hastings Lions and Br. 106 of the Royal Canadian Legion. He served as President of Br. 106 for two terms and was awarded the "Meritorious Service Medal" as well as the "Palm Leaf" - the highest award the Legion bestows. "Ab" was an avid golfer who took part in the annual legion tournaments until well into his nineties. He will be missed by his niece Carla and her husband Dale Selby, their children Matthew, Dana and her husband Michael Eagleson, family in Wales - sisters Lucy Payne, Josie Mogford and brother Glen Nelson and his wife Barbara, brother-in-law Eric Scriver and his wife Anna of Norwood and many more nieces and nephews on both sides of the Atlantic as well as so many friends made over the years. Donations to any of the following: The Salvation Army, The War Amps or your local Legion would be greatly appreciated. And last but not least, thank you to the staff of Mapleview Retirement Residence in Norwood, Ontario, the VON, Nightingale nursing and the CCAC for their care and consideration. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 14th commencing at 2:00 pm at Br. 106 of the Legion in Hastings (club room).13135256
